Finding housing in Tokyo can be challenging and expensive. In the past, however, all international students at Hitotsubashi ICS have been able to find suitable accommodations, either on their own or with the support of the school. It is the policy of ICS to give full support and priority to students who are coming to Japan for the first time. Japanese and non-Japanese students who are already living in Japan are asked to be responsible for their own housing needs, although ICS will provide assistance in exceptional circumstances.
The availability of housing for ICS students is fluid and varies from year to year. Prior to the commencement of each academic year, all incoming students are asked to complete a housing survey and may request information on housing facilities that are currently available at that time. The following details, therefore, are designed to provide prospective students with a general idea of housing facilities in Tokyo.
Guest Rooms at the National Center of Sciences
A small number of guest rooms are available for non-Japanese students on the fourth floor of the National Center of Sciences, where the Hitotsubashi ICS campus is located. These rooms are small but comfortable and are furnished and serviced much like hotel rooms. The cost is about 2,700 yen per night, or approximately 60,000 yen per month, including utilities.
International Houses
Hitotsubashi University has two International Houses for non-Japanese students, but their availability is variable and selection is done by lottery:
- International House at Kunitachi: about one hour’s commute from ICS by train; approximately 20,000 yen per month for both single and married students
- International House at Kodaira: about one hour’s commute from ICS by train; approximately 10,000 yen per month for single students and 20,000 yen per month for married students.
College Town Hachioji
There are many different room types at this facility and about 10 rooms are generally available for non-Japanese or Japanese students (single or married) at a monthly cost of about 40,000 yen to 80,000 yen, depending on the type of room; the commuting time to ICS is around 80 minutes.
