Professor Ito has spent 32 years in finance and investment banking prior to joining ICS. He worked for UBS for 16 years as an investment banker, during which he held the position of the (co-)Head of Investment Banking for UBS in Japan for 13 years. He holds extensive relationships with many of the senior management of major Japanese corporations which he has developed over the length of his career as an investment banker. He personally led many high profile transactions as a Managing Director in areas such as M&As, privatizations, IPOs, equity finance, debt finance, and structured financings. Before joining UBS in 1995, he worked for The Bank of Tokyo for 16 years, including five years in New York. He has had a wide range of experience as a banker in areas such as emerging markets finance, M&A, corporate advisory, debt capital markets, and corporate credit analysis.
Education
Professor Tom Ito received his MBA from Harvard Business School and his BA from the University of Tokyo, Faculty of Economics.
Research Topics
Professor Ito’s research interests include the following: (1) key determinants of successful and unsuccessful M&As in Japan; (2) the variability of equity risk premiums, depending on market conditions and investor sentiment; and (3) how changes in shareholding structure have changed the behavior of Japanese management.
